In accordance with the German custom of that day, Henry became a carpenter's apprentice at the age of 14. Afterserving three years of a four-year apprenticeship, he decided to come to the United States, to a relative who lived near Buffalo Center. Henry worked on the Jasper Dirkson and Fred Schaper farms just south of Rake, Iowa befoe going toCalifornia, where he was employed at a large dairy farm. "HENRY AND ALICE (BURMA) VAN GERPEN

Henry Van Gerpen was born in Pewsum, Germany on February 12, 1904 to Peter and Janna Van Gerpen. His father was a baker. In accordance with the German custom of that day, Henry became a carpenter's apprentice at the age of 14. Afterserving three years of a four-year apprenticeship, he decided to come to the United States, to a relative who lived near Buffalo Center. Henry worked on the Jasper Dirkson and Fred Schaper farms just south of Rake, Iowa befoe going to California, where he was employed at a large dairy farm. Several months later he returned to Iowa, and he and Alice Burma were married on November 20, 1928.

Alice was born on January 27, 1912 on a farm southeast of Rake, the present home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Liverca. Her parents were Jasper and Jennie (Heerkes) Burma, who had moved there from Dumont, Iowa in the early 1900's. The other Burma children were Katie, Ole, Ben and Jasper. When Alice wass one year old her father was forced to retire from farming because of poor health. The family moved to Buffalo Center where Mrs. Burma did house cleaning and took inwashings to support her family. Jasper died in 1928, the year Alice and Henry were married.

The young couple began farming in 1929 near Buffalo Center. Henry's father, Peter, who had come from Germany in 1923, made his home with them until he died in 1952 at the age of 87. In 1951 Henry and Alice returned to the neighborhood where she was born, moving to the "Sandum place" east of Rake, Iowa. They lived there until Henry retired from farming in 1970. Since that time they have made their home in Buffalo Center.

Five children were born to Henry and Alice. Their youngest son, Harold, died of leukemia at the age of three. Elaine, who married George Boehm, lived on a farm south of Buffalo Center before retiring to town; they have six children:Harley, Varlaine, Jim, Karen, LaRoy and Jerry. ... Lila is the wife of Roger Hassebrock; they live in Des Moines, Iowa and their children are Diane, Susan and John. ..."

"Funeral services for Henry Van Gerpen, 93, were held Thursday, January 15, 1:30 p.m. at First Reformed Church with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Interment was at Olena Mound Cemetery with Winter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Music was provided by Marlene Krull as organist, soloist Warren Feldlck and vocalists Diana Kramersmeier and Marilyn Balvance. Casketbearers were Henry's grandchildren: Harley, Jim, LeRoy and Jerry Boehm; Paul and Mike Van Gerpen; Bruce,Mark and Barry Van Gerpen; and John Hassebrock.

After serving three years of a four year apprenticeship, he decided to come to the United States, to a relative who lived near Buffalo Center.

Henry was united in marriage to Alice Burma on November 20, 1928 at Garner. The young couple began farming in 1929 near Buffalo Center. In 1951, they moved to the neighborhood where Alice was born, and began farming at the "Sandum place" east of Rake. They lived there until Henry retired from fanning in"

"1970. Since that time they have made their home in Buffalo Center.

Henry was a long-time member of First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center, where he faithfully attended and served his church as Elder and Deacon. He was also a member of the church's Golden Club.

Farming was Henry's love and hobby. He also enjoyed reading in his favorite chair, playing marbles and after his retirement, he enjoyed fishing with Alice. His honesty, love of family and concern for his grandchildren will long be remembered by those who knew and loved him.

Henry passed away at his home on Monday, January 12, 1998.

He is survived by his wife, of 69 years, Alice of Buffalo Center; two daughters: Elaine Boehm and her husband, George, of Buffalo Center; Lila Hassebrock and her husband, Roger, of Des Moines; two sons: Peter and his wife, Lou Ann, ofRake; Arnold and his wife, Julienne, of Rake; 18 grandchildren: 48 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Harold; two sisters; three brothers and by a great-grandson, Allan."
