Dad and Mother settled in Buffalo Center, in an apartment above the Femrite Variety Store, now Senior Citizens Center, and Dad started working as a farmhand on the Chicago Stock Farm. Soon the head dairy barn position opened up and Dadwas chosen by Mr. Young to receive that position; he was allowed to move into a house on the farm. Mother had charge of keeping the office clean. My brother Ralph was born there on January 8, 1912. ..."

"Services Held Here For Jake Mastin Saturday, Feb. 19
Funeral services for James (Jake) K. Mastin, 82, of Buffalo Center were held Saturday, February 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center. Rev. E. S. Tschetter officiated and Winter Funeral Service was in chargeof arrangements. Interment was in Graceland cemetery and pallbearers were Roger Mastin, Kenneth Mastin, Phil Orthel, Ronald Anderson, David Carlson and Marlyn Hanson.
James Keifer (Jake) Mastin, son of Saul and Etta Mastin was born December 3, 1889 on a farm near Elkin, North Carolina where he grew to manhood.
On December 27, 1908, he was united in marriage to Lydia Spencer of Boonville, North Carolina at Elkin, North Carolina.
To this union were born two sons, Paul of Buffalo Center and Ralph of Elmore, Minnesota. They also took into their home and raised as a daughter, a niece, Mrs. George (Mattie) Bowers of Buffalo Center, |owa.
He also leaves to mourn his passing two sisters, Mrs. Edith Hayes and Mrs. Sallie Lineberry of Elkin, North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lydia, his parents and one brother, Weaver of Elkin, North Carolina. He also leaves to mourn his passing eleven grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
On May 8, 1910, they moved to Buffalo Center, Iowa where he worked on a farm for a while before he started farming for himself and farmed in this community until 1936. After this he was engaged in business in Iowa and Minnesota until1945 he contracted a star mail route out of Garner, Iowa where they lived until 1955, when they bought a home in Buffalo Center where he lived until he was unable to be alone. In the year 1915, he joined the United Methodist Church inBuffalo Center, and attended the worship services as long as health permitted.
In September, 1970 he moved into the Grohaven Nursing Home at Forest City, Iowa. In the spring of 1971 he moved to the Timely Mission Nursing Home of Buffalo Center where he resided until his death. He passed away early February 17, 1972 at the Buffalo Center Hospital at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 13 days." <>
