"HENRY BEENKEN FAMILY Written by Harold Ubben, Grandson

Henry Beenken came to America in the late 1870's, and settled in Belmond, Iowa where he worked for different farmers. About 1882 he came to Ramsey Township near the village of Ramsey. He purchased 160 acres in Section 12, which is nowowned by Wence Vodraska. In 1884 he married Grace Pals of Belmond. To this union six children were born: George, Peter, Hattie (Mrs. Fred Ubben), Jelto, Warner, and Hans. Grace passed away in 1899.

In 1901 Henry married Caroline Long of Algona, Iowa. To this union seven children were born: Donald, Henry "Fritz", Lottie (Mrs. Rank Meinders), Heiko, Eugene, Helmer, and Elizabeth (Mrs. Raymond Edwards). Three children are livingtoday: Heiko at Emmetsburg, Iowa; Eugene at Albert Lea, Minnesota; and Elizabeth at Armstron, Iowa.

Hary lost his land in the Depression years and moved to Titonka where he passed away in 1932.

I can remenber my Grandfather Beenken and mother tell about the disappearance of the village of Ramsey and the beginning of the town of Germania. This happened after the Rock Island Railroad laid its tracks westward. I also rememberseveral old foundations of houses from the old village of Ramsey when I started going to school at Ramsey No. 6 in 1930. My mother and her brothers also attended the school." <>
