Clarence was born on October 15, 1909 to Vino and Dena (Penning) Heitland who lived southwest of Buffalo Center. He was the third child with an older brother Anton of Ruxh City, Minnesota; an older sister Mae (Mrs. Ralph Smith) of Woden,Iowa (deceased) and Alice (Mrs. Joe Cline) of Woden (deceased).

As a child Clarence attended school at Grant No. 4.

Gladys Aukes, daughter of Edze and Selma Aukes, lived south of Buffalo Center and attended Grant No. 4 school also. She spent her teen years helping with the household chores on her parents' farm and helping neighbors.

On October 15, 1935 Clarence and Gladys were married at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center wich they have always attended.

To this union five children were born: Leona (Van Hove) of Buffalo Center; Gerald of Clear Lake, Iowa; Donna (Bredeson) of Estherville, Iowa; Judy (Hansen) of Trenton, Missouri; and Dale of Forest City, Iowa; and 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The first five years they farmed four miles north of Buffalo Center, then in 1941 bought the farm northeast of town. In 1977 they built their new home in Buffalo Center and moved to town in May.

Clarence and Gladys and their family enjoyed the neighborhood get=togethers and fishing. they enjoyed traveling and visiting their children.

Clarence passed away on March 6, 1979. Gladys keeps busy at this time with church work, quilting, gardening and other hobbies.
