Maurice E. Hayenga was the son of Rev. L.H. and Amelia Blocklinger Hayenga. The family came to the George area when Rev. Hayenga served the Zoar Presbyterian Church. Maurice attended ruralschool, the George High School and furthered hiseducation at the Capitol City Commercial College in Des Moines, Iowa. In September 1917, he joined the army and served in the United States and France in World War I. He then returned to George where he worked at Martin Brother'sStore.

He married Tillie Klinkenborg, daughter of Evert and Julia Christians Klinkenborg. Tillie spent a few years on the family farm and then the family moved into town. Tillie graduated from George School and enrolled at Iowa State TeachersCollege in Cedar Falls. She attended college for three years and taught for a number of years in both the rural schools and the local town school. ... The couple raised one daughter, Marlene (m. Robert Kannegieter), who lives in George."

Maurice E. Hayenga was the son of Rev. L.H. and Amelia Blocklinger Hayenga. The family came to the George area when Rev. Hayenga served the Zoar Presbyterian Church. He married Tillie Klinkenborg, daughter of Evert and Julia Christians Klinkenborg. Tillie spent a few years on the family farm and then the family moved into town. Tillie graduated from George School and enrolled at Iowa State TeachersCollege in Cedar Falls. She attended college for three years and taught for a number of years in both the rural schools and the local town school.

Maurice and Tille started Hayenga Mercantile Store on Mail Street. Both attended the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church where they served in a number of offices. Maurice was a charter member and helped organize the Jack Sauter Post 404 of theAmerican Legion, served on the Soldier's Relief Board, was Superintendent of the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery, belonged to the George Chamber of Commerce and was a fireman for many years.

Tillie, too was very active in the community, being the first "Avon Lady" in George, a leader in the girl Scouts, a faithful member of the Jack Sauter American Legion Auxiliary and participated in many activities in her church.

The couple raised one daughter, Marlene (m. Robert Kannegieter), who lives in George."

Marlene (Hayenga) Kannegieter was born November 16, 1934, at her parent's home in George, IA, the daughter of Morris Hayenga and Tillie (Klinkenborg) Hayenga. She grew up in George and graduated from George Community High School. She was united in marriage to Robert Kannegieter, Sr. on December 6, 1952 at Monroe, SD. They made their home at various locations before moving to George. For almost 30 years, Marlene was the Activity Director at Good Samaritan Center in George, a job she dearly loved. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, gardening and canning - always had canned goods to send home with relatives. Her home always had an open door for her relatives to stay when they came to George to visit. As an only child, Marlene considered all of her cousins her brothers and sisters. She was a member of the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women's Group and American Legion Auxiliary, in which she would have celebrated her 75th year of membership in May of this year. After Bob died in 2010, she continued to live on her own until she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in March in 2016, where she died this past Monday morning, March 20, 2017 at the age of eighty-two.

She is survived by her daughter, Ronda (Robert) VanBriesen of George, IA; son, Rob Kannegieter (friend Susan) of Cherokee, IA; 10 grandchildren, Mike Thompson; Kim (James) Collins, BJ (Devin) VanBriesen, Jessica (Justin) Overman, Kayla (Josh) Engel, Kandi (Eric) Poppler, Nikki (Mark) VanOort, Kelly (Kristi) Kannegieter, Tyler (Jessica) Kannegieter, and Lanaya (friend Chris Harringa) Kannegieter; 17 great-grandchildren, Kaylee Collins, Logan & Ryleigh VanBriesen, Jordyn, Jayla, & Jaxon Overman, Calvin & Tessa Poppler, baby Engel due in June, Kory, Addisyn and Dustin VanOort, Brock and Brittany Kannegieter, Aubrey, Leah, Liv, & Beau Kannegieter; son-in-law, Bob Thompson of Parker, CO; two sisters-in-law, Wanda Koger and Gladys Kannegieter both of George, IA; and numerous special nieces and nephews.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Morris & Tillie Hayenga; husband, Robert

Kannegieter; and daughter, Linda Thompson.
