Gary Behrens March 2, 1951 - July 14, 2021

WORTHINGTON, Minn. - Gary Behrens, 70, Rushmore, Minn., died Wednesday, July 14, in Sunset Hospice Cottage.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 29, at Benson Funeral Home in Worthington. Pastor Anne M. Hokenstad will officiate. Burial will be in Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Gary Lee Behrens, 70, of rural Rushmore, MN, passed away on July 14, 2021 in Worthington, MN.
Gary was born on March 2, 1951 to parents, Floyd and Evelyn (Ponto) Behrens. He graduated from Worthington High School and shortly after was drafted to Vietnam at the age of 20. In 16 months with the United States Army, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, an Army Commendation Medal, and Aircraft Crewman Badge, a Bronze Star, and an Air Medal while finishing his time in Vietnam as a helicopter door gunner. In March of 1972, he was discharged and returned stateside.

Not too long after returning from service, Gary started helping his father, Floyd, on the family farm. Gary continued to farm until his retirement. Gary was united in marriage to Brenda (Johnson) Behrens on March 1, 1991. They had one child, Whitney (Behrens) Fossell. Gary enjoyed working on restoration projects, attending the Clay County Fair as a family tradition, going to races, and spending time with his family and friends.

The family would like to thank you for your support and presence today. A special thank you is extended to neighbors, family and friends for your support and generosity. The family also thanks all of the doctors, nurses, and hospice.

Gary is survived by his daughter, Whitney and son-in-law Kane, his sister Linda Best and his brother David Behrens.

Gary is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Brenda, and his mother and father.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2021, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by memorial services at 2:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN, with Pastor Anne M. Hokenstad officiating. Burial will be in the Worthington Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Benson Funeral Home in Worthington is in charge of the arrangements.
