On Sunday, 1 Aug 1993, Gertie Meyer called to say the pastor of Lakota Community Chapel said Aunt Erna would not live through the night. She has pneumonia and her kidneys have failed. She was placed in the nursing home in BuffaloCenter, IA about a month ago. She is in the hospital in Blue Earth, MN.

Erna died at the hospital in Blue Earth MN at 10 a.m. & will be buried with her husband, Henry Meyer, in Maple Hill Cem.

"Funeral services for Erna Meyer, 83, of Lakota [IA] are being held Thrusday, August 5 at 1:30 p.m. at Community Chapel [in Lakota] with Rev. Ronald Wheeler officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery at Lakota. Mr. Meyer diedMonday, August 2, 1993 at United Hospital, Blue Earth, Minnesota. She had been a resident at Timely Mission Nursing Home for a short time.

Diane Coy was the organist and Verlin Griese, the vocalist. Casketbearers were grandsons and granddaughters, Sherianne Meyer, Douglas Meyer, Kirk Meyer, Rick Meyer, Brent Meyer, Scott Meyer, Tami Meyer and Tyann Meyer.

Erna Meyer was born November 12, 1909 at Bunderhammrich, Ostfriesland, West Germany to Amos and Foltje (Diihring) [sic] [should be Dühring] Kromminga. She attended country school through the eighth grade.

She came to the United States January 20, 1938 and on January 31, 1938 she was married to William Henry Meyer [sic] [should be Henry Meyer], who had emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1925 with his younger brother, Carl Meyer,aboard the ship Stuttgart.

The couple farmed in Ledyard township north of Lakota. To this union was born two sons, Willie and Gary. Henry died December 8, 1984.

Erna accepted Christ as her personal Savior in 1945 and was baptized several years later. She was an active member of Community Chapel of Lakota.

Survivors include her sons, Willie and wife, Marty of Phoenix, Arizona and Gary and wife, Frances of Lakota; a sister, Alma Bunjes of Germany, eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and two sisters."

A German emigration document gives Erna a middle name. This is the only known occurance of her middle name. Her son, Gary, was not aware of it, neither was her brother-in-law, Carl Meyer.
