Death Takes Old Remsen Resident. George Raveling Here Sixty Years.

Funeral services were held Wednesday in St. Paul's Evangelical church at Remsen for George Raveling, 77, early settler in the county.

Born in Ost Friesland, Germany, in 1865, George Raveling came to this country with his parents in 1882, the family locating on a farm near Remsen. He later engaged in farming on his own account.

Mr. Raveling was united in marriage on February 21, 1894, to Amelia Meyers, who passed away on March 18, 1926. Five children were born to this union, all living. The children are: William, Lucan, Minn.; Minnie and Herman at home; Otto, farming south of Remsen, and Mrs. Leo Spielman, also farming near Remsen. There are two grandchildren, Elaine and Lvonne Raveling, daughters of Wm. Raveling, of Lucan.

Death Takes Old Remsen Resident. George Raveling Passes On At Age of 77 Years; Funeral Wednesday.

Funeral services were held yesterday in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church for George Raveling, one of the oldest residents of this community, who passed away at his home here Monday morning at the age of 77 years, and after 60 years as a resident here. Surviving are three sons and two daughters, also two brothers.

Mr. Raveling was in splendid health until a few years ago when he began to fail, and for the past year and one-half he was confined to his home, for the past several months strictly to the sick-bed. His death was foreseen and members of the family were at his bedside.

Born in Ost Friesland, Germany, in 1865, George Raveling came to this country with his parents in 1882, the family locating on a farm near Remsen. Later he went into partnership with his brother William and the two farmed a number of years on what is now known as the old Reiners farm northeast of Remsen. Later they dissolved partnership and George bought his own farm three miles north of town.

Mr. Raveling was united in marriage on February 21, 1894, to Amelia Meyers, who passed away on March 18, 1926. Five children were born to this union, all living. The children are: William, Lucan, Minn.; Minnie and Herman at home; Otto, farming south of Remsen, and Jessie (Mrs. Leo Spielman), also farming near Remsen. There are two grandchildren, Elaine and Yvonne Raveling, daughters of Wm. Raveling of Lucan.

The deceased man was of a family of nine children-seven boys and two girls-of whom remain but his brothers, Peter of Remsen and Wm. Of Lamberton, Minn.

Mr. Raveling was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in St. Paul's church in 1891, by the Rev. Bender.

Funeral services were held in St. Paul's church Wednesday afternoon and were largely attended by many old friends who came from far and near to join the family in its sorrow.

In the passing of George Raveling, Remsen and community lost another good old resident who will be missed by many friends. Mr. Raveling was a man of excellent character, possessed of a quiet, unassuming disposition but who made friends easily and held their respect and confidence through the test of time. He labored long and diligently on the farm, retiring to a well earned rest in Remsen as he chose to remain among those who knew and admired his manly attributes. He was a devoted husband, father and brother, a loyal friend and a splendid citizen who will long remain in the memories of those who knew him. The bereaved family and other relatives have the sympathy of the entire community over their loss.

Pall bearers were: Hans Raveling of Rock Rapids, Henry Zachte and Phil Raveling of Lamberton, Minn.; William Raveling and George Raveling of Remsen, and Henry Raveling of Linn Grove.

Among the many relatives who came for the funeral of George Raveling were Mr. and Mrs. Philip Raveling of Lucan, Minn., who have been visitors in Remsen annually ever since they left here nearly 30 years ago. On going to Lucan they settled on the same farm which they are occupying today. For the past 10 years Phil has been a member of the board of supervisors but is not a candidate this year because he holed over two more years. He says crop conditions have been very favorable in Redwood county this year. Corn, flax and oats yielded well and of good quality, but barley was rated "fair". On the trip here he observed conditions and said there was very little good corn between Tracy, Minn., and Sheldon, Iowa, until they reached Sioux county. He said the best of all is around Remsen. The Lucan territory was visited by heavy snowstorm on September 25, when about two inches of snow fell, but the weather since has been good. --
