Though this was some time later than the very first settlers, it was still three years before the railroad was laid throughGeorge, and for several years they had to ford rivers to get to Sheldon or Hull (which was then called Pattersonville). Children in the Van Anken family were Ella (Mrs. Chris Wieman) and Eltje (married Tracy Gruys). The picture is ofJohn, the son of Eltje and Tracy, with his Grandpa Van Anken who was eighty-two at that time."

"John Van Anken was born August 23, 1907 in rural George, IA, the son of Eltje and Trancy (Gruys) Van Anken. He was raised on the family farm north of George. He attended rural school near George and graduated from the George HighSchool in 1927. After graduation he continued to live with his parents and helped farm their land. On June 4, 1935, John was united in marriage to Tillie Kruse, in Little Rock at the Salem Reformed Church. At the start of their newllife together they lived and farmed southeast of George. Later they moved in 1947 to a farm northwest of Sibley and farmed there until his retirement in 1974. John and Tillie continued to live on the acreage until 1982 at which timethey moved to their present home in Little Rock. John was an active member of the Salem Reformed Church of Little Rock. He taught Sunday School for many years and also served as Deacon and Elder for the church consistory. He was amember of the Men's Chorus and enjoyed signing in the chorus. He also enjoyed traveling during his retirement years and loved nature. One of his favorite pastimes was planting trees on and around his farmstead. John died suddenly thispast Tuesday evening at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon at the age of ninety.

He is survived by his wife, Tillie of sisty-two years; son, Elgin Van Anken and his wife, Sandy of Bloomington, MN; two grandchildren; Rick Jon and Marissa Ann. He is also survived by one sister, Hermina Dykhouse of Luvern, MN and manynieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Johanna van Anken and Anna Janke; and one brother, Elmer.

The Family of John Van Anken invites you to join them in the Fellowship Hall for refreshments following the graveside service.
