Though this was some time later than the very first settlers, it was still three years before the railroad was laid through George, and for several years they had to ford rivers to get to Sheldon or Hull (which was then called Pattersonville). Children in the Van Anken family were Ella (Mrs. Chris Wieman) and Eltje (married Tracy Gruys). The picture is of John, the son of Eltje and Tracy, with his Grandpa Van Anken who was eighty-two at that time."
