Note: John F Abels, 85, of George, passed away Sunday, June 18 at the Canton-Inwood hospital in Canton, SD. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 21 at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church of George with Pastor Robert L Grupp officiating.Organist was Rose Jiskoot and singers were Ronald and Bonnie Smith. Honorary bearers were Jeff Ripley, Melvin Schrick, Marilyn E Klaassen, Wesley Abels, Alfred Kruger, and Marvin Becker. Casket bearers were Larry Nattress, Wayne Ripley,Randy Meyer, Lester Ripley, Kelly Meyer and Gaylen Abels. Burial was in Zoar Presbyterian cemetery.

John Frederick Abels was born November 21, 1909 at rural George, IA. He was the son of George and Carrie (Klaassen) Abels. He grew up and lived on the farm 4 miles east of George. He attended Dale #2 Country School. He married Trena Meyeron January 4, 1938 at the Sioux Falls Presbyterian Church. They farmed east of George until retiriing from farming in 1967. He then worked for Leu's Implement of Sibley and Siebrand Manufacturing of George. He was a member of the EbenezerPresbyterian Church where he serves as trustee, Superintendent of Sunday School and Elder. He also served a a country school director.

he leaves to cherish his memories his wife Trena of George, 1 son Eugene Gary Abels and wife Gertrude of Sibley, and 2 daughters Alicia Frances Marsh and husband Bernie of Worthington, MN and Marti Corinne Fluit and husband Larry ofInwood, IA. Also left are 13 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; 1 brother George Abels of Worthington, a sister-in-law Mrs. Harm Abels of Dawn, MN and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, brother Harm and 2 sisters Hattie and one who died as an infant.
