"Christian De Groot ... Chris De Groot, Sr. -- was born near Baileyville, Illinois, the son of Christian De Groot, in the year 1868. From Illinois he moved with his parents to a farm near George. In 1894 Chris married Hendericka (Reka) Willemssen, daughter ofUlfert H. Willemssen and his wife Bauktje. The young couple settled on a farm four miles west of Ashton and later moved four miles east of George.

Their children were Chris Jr. (married Lena Ackerman); Ulfert (married Ellen Van Hauen); Bertha (Mrs. Ben Stubbe); Fred (married Kathryn Kruger); Henry (married Clara Schrick); John (married Evelyn Schroeder); and Berniece (Mrs. WilliamEichman).

Mr. and Mrs. De Groot were charter members of the Lyon County First Presbyterian Church. For many years Mr. De Groot held a church office. Mrs. De Groot was a charter member of the Dorcas Society that was organized later. Mr. De Grootwas also the director of the rural school in his district for many years. When they retired they moved to the house in George that originally stood at 305 East Iowa Avenue, where the Peter Ackerman home is now located.

The picture is a five generation picture showing Chris De Groot, Sr.; his grand-daughter Gladys (Mrs. Ted Ver Doorn); Mrs. Bertha De Groot, the mother of Chris Sr.; and Chris Jr. holding Dennis Ver Dorn. This was taken on Mrs. Bertha DeGroot's ninety-fifth birthday."
