Note: Laurence Gordon Harbers, the son of John and Harriet (Jones) Harbers was born May 28, 1917 in San Juan, TX and moved with his parents to the Harbers Homestead in Gilman Township of Osceola County, IA in October of that same year. Heattended country school at Gilman and graduated from Ashton high School in 1934.

Laurence farmed with his father several years and in 1938 went to work for CJ Harbers International Implement Co. at German Valley and Freeport, IL. He returned to Iowa in late 1939. He was united in marriage to Irene Willemssen onJanuary 11, 1944 in the First Presbyterian Church of Ashton and they made their home on a farm SW of Ashton before moving to the Harbers Homestead in 1947. They retired in 1979 and continued to live on the farm until 1996, when they movedinto Sheldon, IA. Laurence was an avid sportsman, playing basketball, baseball and loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashton, where he had served as a deacon and elder. He was a charter member ofthe Ashton "100" club and of the prairie Queen Kiwanis of Sheldon.

Laurence and Irene began to seek the warmer climates of TX in 1973 and from 1978 made their winter home in Tuscon, AZ. Laurence had a heart valve (Bovine) replacement surgery at the AZ University Medical Center on April 13, 2001 andreturned to Sheldon May 25, he resumed his daily activities with a new vigor. He became ill suddenly on June 27th and was airlifted to Mercy medical Center in Sioux City< IA. There he passed away on Friday June 29, 2001 at the age of 84years, 1 month and 1 day.

Laurence is survived by Irene, his wife of 57 years, 3 children; Eileen and husband (Ron) Bowerman of Des Moines, IA, Lee and wife Claudia Harbers of Tuscon, AZ, Jane and husband Mark Baumgardner of Des Moines, IA; 3 grandchildren, ToddLee Harbers of Cottonwood, AZ, Chandler Bowerman of Dekalb, IL, and Laura Harbers of San Jose, Ca; a sister Pauline Carson of San Jacinto, CA and his step mother Neva Harbers of Sheldon, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and abrother Lt. James Donald Harbers.
