Erna Helen (Schmidt) Sleper was born February 2, 1925 near Woden, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Lena (Boyken) Schmidt. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She graduated from Woden High School and AIB College of Business in Des Moines, after which she worked at the Titonka Savings Bank and the International Harvester dealership in Titonka. Erna was united in marriage to John R. (Joe) Sleper on December 18, 1946 and they made their home on the family farm in rural Titonka. Erna's faith in God was a very important part of her life and she was an active member of Ramsey Reformed Church in rural Titonka. She was also a member of the American Legion. Erna was a gifted tailor and seamstress and often sewed for others. She and her late husband Joe enjoyed gardening and traveling together. Afternoon tea was part of her daily routine, and Erna could often be found sharing tea and cookies with family or friends. Spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her much joy.

Erna is survived by her children, Joleen (Steven) Heyer of Titonka, John (Maureen) Sleper of Titonka, and Bruce (Nancy) Sleper of Cheyenne, Wyoming; grandchildren, Jeremy (Jody) Heyer, Melissa Heyer, Jessica (Scott) Erickson, Jennifer (Jacob) Etheredge, and Christopher Heyer; great grandchildren, Samantha, Justin and Hayden Heyer, John Etheredge, and Christian Erickson; sisters-in-law Clara Mayland and Marilyn Schmidt; aunt Mildred Schmidt of Titonka; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Erna was preceded in death by her husband Joe (May 23, 1991); infant daughter (October 5, 1948); her parents; twin brother, Ernest Schmidt; two sisters, Marie Schmidt and Lena Mae Hickey; and three half-brothers, Richard, William and Henry Mayland.
