Verda M. Vanderzyden, 77, of Eldora, Iowa, died Sunday, October 16, 2005, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, October 19, 2005, at the Eldora United Methodist Church in Eldora, with Pastors Douglas Harding and Douglas Holmes officiating. Burial will be at 1:00 P.M. at Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. A memorial fund has been established.

Verda was born February 6, 1928, in rural Wellsburg, Iowa, daughter of Henry John and Fannie (DeNeui) Kannegieter. Verda attended Wellsburg High School graduating in 1946. She continued her education at Calvin College in Grand Rapids Michigan where she met her husband Henry. Following her graduation from Calvin College Verda taught at Illiana Christian School, in South Holland, Illinois.She was united in marriage to Henry Gerard Vanderzyden on August 19, 1949 at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg, Iowa. They farmed in the Steamboat Rock area for five years and Verda also taught as a substitute at Timothy Christian School near Wellsburg. They then farmed in the Wellsburg area for nearly 20 years and moved to Eldora in the early 1970s. Verda, "Mrs. Van" as she was known by her students, then taught at the Eldora Elementary School for about 20 years and as a substitute after retiring at the age of 63.Verda was a member of the Eldora United Methodist Church where she was active with the United Methodist Women, choir, and the Fireside Sunday School Class. Verda was a supporter of the Timothy Christian School and was a past member of the Timothy Sisters. She was also a member of Ostfriesland Society, and was formerly involved with the Christian Reformed Church Bible Camp near Story City. Verda enjoyed painting, swimming, nature, music, photography, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.She is survived by her husband Henry, two daughters Kathryn and her husband Darell McMartin of Grundy Center; and Kristen and her husband Darrell Sents of Wellsburg; son Henry Richard and his wife Susan Vanderzyden of Byron, Illinois; two sisters, Mary and her husband Howard Handlogton of Rockford, Illinois; and Martha and her husband Marvin DeVries of Madison, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren and their five spouses; and fourteen great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents.--Abels Funeral Homes
