Funeral services for Iola Gray Steffensen, 81, were held Monday, December 9 at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center at 10:30 a.m. Rev. William Peake officiated. Organist Marlene Krull accompanied vocalists Marilyn Balvance and Diana Kramersmeier. The congregation also sang. Casketbearers were Gary Meinders, Larry Meinders, Keith Huesman, Denny Meinders, Mark Meinders and Larry Gray. Interment was in Ramsey Reformed Cemetery in rural Titonka. Iola passed away ather home on Friday, December 6, 2002. Winter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Iola Gray Steffensen, daughter of Henry and Nellie (Riekens) Meinders, was born on her parent's farm near Buffalo Center on July 7, 1921. She attended country school and graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1940. On March 4, 1941 she was united in marriage to Richard Gray at the Ramsey Reformed Church near Titonka. They farmed near Titonka and later moved to a farm six miles east and one mile south of Buffalo Center. In 1958, they moved to Spencer, Wisconsin tofarm and operated a dairy farm. Three years later they returned to their farm near Buffalo Center. After Richard passed away in 1974, Iola decided to quit farming and began working at the Timely Mission Nursing Home and also at the A&WDrive In, both in Buffalo Center. On May 30, 1980 she married Cecil Steffensen. They moved to their home in Buffalo Center in 1981. For many years following, Iola and Cecil would winter in McAllen, Texas.

Iola loved her home, her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took immense pleasure in sewing and selling her craft items. She was always active in her church circles and loved helping at their bazaars. Her love for her Godwas passed on to her children from birth. She would always lead her family in their dinner prayers. She was willing to help anyone who showed need for assistance. Iola was a loving and. kind-hearted mother and friend to many and she willbe greatly missed by all her acquaintances.

Iola is survived by her husband, Cecil, of Buffalo Center; her children: Ardell and his wife, Becky, of Moravia; Roger of Clear Lake; Karen and her husband, Steve Evenson, of Algona; Mike and his wife, Collen, of Folsom, California; Lindaand her husband, Ron Abels, of Thompson; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers: Alvin Meinders and his wife, Jo; Wilbert Meinders and his wife, Gert and Jim Meinders, all of Buffalo Center; a sister, Marie Nuehring,of Garner; a sister-in-law, Katherine Meinders, of Spencer, Wisconsin; a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Richard, and by her brother, Dick Meinders.
