Samuel John Salsberry

WWII veteran was born in Nineveh

Samuel John (John S.) Salsberry, 77, of Route 6, Linesville, died Tuesday, February 3, 2004, in Meadville Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born April 15, 1926, in Nineveh, a son of Milo and Ida Smith Salsberry.

Mr. Salsberry was a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II as a sharpshooter with the 8th Infantry in Belgium, France, Germany and England.

He was employed by Dave Oskin Construction in Linesville as a heavy equipment operator for several years and at one time worked out of Operating Engineers 132B in West Virginia and 166B in Erie.

Mr. Salsberry was Protestant.

He was a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Linesville, and Linesville Sportsman Club.

He enjoyed a good joke, laughing with the boys at the club and operating cranes.

On June 8, 1946, he married Viola Jane Sprowls, who survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Karen Nickerson, Judy Oskin and Nancy Nickerson, all of Linesville, and Joyce Widner of Henderson, Nev.; four sons, Ed of Erie, Jerry of Ridgeland, S.C., Gary of Linesville and Roy Salsberry of PortRoyal, S.C.; a sister, Gayle Calladine of Linesville; a foster sister, Wilma Beabout of Wheeling, W.Va.; two foster brothers, Raymond Ackley of Hadley and Wayne Ackley of Maryland; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; andseveral nieces and nephews.

Deceased are a son, Eugene Salsberry; his foster parents, Forest and Cora Smith Ackley; a brother, Clinton Salsberry; two half sisters, Wilma Dobshaw and Gladys Roach; two foster sisters, Lorena Horne and Marabelle Ackley; and two fosterbrothers, Allen and Howard Ackley.

Services were held in Linesville, with burial in Pennline Cemetery. At the request of the deceased, memorials may be made to Salvation Army, 1087 Park Avenue, Meadville, PA 16335; or American Lung Association of Northwest Pennsylvania,352 West Eighth Street, Erie, PA 16512.
