Note: Earl L. Kuper, 78, a lifetime resident of the Tacoma area, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 3, 1999. Earl was born May 23, 1920 to Ben and Mary Kuper in Tacoma. He graduated from Kapowsin High School in 1938 and served in the Army during WWII. Earl played semi-pro baseball for the Tacoma Tigers and the San Diego Padres during the late 1940's and will be best remembered by his old fans as 'THE BAT'. He was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Old-timers Baseball and and Softball Hall of Fame on May 21, 1989. After working for Sears for over 30 years, Earl retired, but later pursued a second career as a general contractor running Kuper Construction Co. After retiring again in 1989, he kept busy doing remodeling jobs for family and friends. He was actively involved in sports his entire life. He played on various slow pitch softball teams, even after turning 70 years old. He bowled on many leagues and was a member of the Tacoma Horseshoe Club. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Mary Kuper, wife Marguerite, brothers Billy and Ken, and sisters Doris and Jackie. Survivors include his loving partner, Lorraine Johnson and her family; his daughters, Christie (Mike) Cobb of Kennewick, WA, and Valarie Snavely of Grayland, WA; brother Robert of Graham, WA; aunt Irene Morris of Tacoma; 5 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation begins Friday, Noon until 9 a.m., Mt. View Funeral Home. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999 in the Valley Chapel. Donations may be made in memory of Earl to the Shanaman Sports Museum, 9908 63rd Ave. Ct. E., Puyallup, WA 98373. Earl will be greatly missed; he was loved by all.
