    Jaren des onderscheids aan de Veluwezoom, 1863-1869:
    Pieter had begin 1863 zijn Utrechtse rechtenstudie voltooid met een 'aan mijn voor-malige voogd C.G. Merkus' opgedragen proeve van academische bekwaamheid. Zo trad hij in de voetsporen van zijn twee oudste broers die trouwens eveneens kort na de afsluiting van hun rechtenstudies in het huwelijk waren getreden. Vervolgens vestigde hij zich als advocaat in Arnhem." Nog voor het einde van het jaar, op 22 december, stierf hij echter op navrante wijze. De Schager Courant bericht over de dood van 'de algemeen geachte en geziene advocaat': 'Voor eenige dagen naar het secreet gaande, nam hij een licht mede, de slip van zijn hemd vatte vuur aan de brandende kaars en het gevolg was, dat hij aan de heupen en rug, zulke zware brandwonden bekwam dat hij [...] na een smartelijk lijden van zes dagen' was overleden. Het stukje besluit met de opmerking dat hij pas kort geleden was gehuwd en een jonge weduwe 'in zwangeren toestand' achterliet. De Tielsche Courant voegt hieraan toe dat zijn nog jeugdige echtgenote vrouw op zijn geschreeuw afkwam en zo schrok 'dat zij van de trappen en in zwijm viel. De heer Merkus hierdoor nog meer ontsteld, vergat voor een ogenblik zijn eigen gevaar, zoodat de vlam eerst gebluscht was toen hem de rug verschroeid was'.
