With the Merkus belongings there is a spoon. It is said in my family that during the persecutions against the protestants in France, (starting in 1685 continuing for about 80 years, which had as a consequence that a lot of wealthy protestant people flew France mainly to Germany and Holland or maried in Holland so that their children could inherit, which was not anymore possible in France for them), one of these families from Le Mans sent to Holland his boy of 6 years old accompanied by an old servant. Unfortunately the old servant died on the boat during the trip. In these days, the inhabitants of foreign countries had the kind habit to welcome and help their unlucky co-religionists arriving in harbours. It happend that Mr and Mrs Merkus were on the wharf in Amsterdam and had pity for the lonely boy. The captain of the boat could not tell them much concerning the boy which knew only his first name "Henri". As identity he possessed only a small silver spoon with armorials of his family: "Laigre".
Mr Merkus was a wealthy publisher, but with his wife Arkstee, they could not have children and decided to adopt the boy.

This story was written by my great grandmother who had it from her father. She tells also that her grandfather exchanged letters with descendants of Hendrick Merkus in Holland.
I am not so sure this story can be believed. But then, why this spoon? We don't have any relation with the Laigre or people in that part of France in Le Mans.

I will give you also pictures of Hans Caspar Arkstée.

    With my best regards,
    Anne Faivre
