Jenny's halfzus Line Riesz-Merkus was met haar man en hun zoon van-uit Indië naar Nederland teruggekeerd. Omstreeks 1860 had zij in Den Haag een verhouding gekregen met de zes jaar jongere mr. Renier Frederik Willem baron Sloet tot Toutenborgh, kamerheer in buitengewone dienst aan het hof. Op nieuwjaarsdag 1863 leidde dit tot een pistoolduel tussen hem en de bedrogen echtgenoot in de Wassenaarse duinen. Het was voor de tweede maal dat om deze famme fatale geduelleerd werd. De secondanten waren Jenny's broer Cas (dus een zwager van Riesz), Willem Hendrik graaf van Bylandt, Adolph Charles baron Bentinck en jonkheer Claudius Willem Frederik Gevers. Ondanks zijn ervaring met vuurwapens werd de beledigde echtgenoot in de zijde getroffen. De rechter sprak alle betrokkenen vrij, ook in het door de officier van justitie aangespannen hoger beroep.
