William enlisted in the NZ Expeditionary Force and fought in WWI in Gallipoli where he took a gunshot wound to his right arm and shoulder in 1915 in the Dardanelles. He was discharged on medical grounds in 1916.d five years off his age, and indicated he was 33 years of age, born on 15 April 1882 in Thames, NZ. Instead his birth certificate shows he was 38 years of age born on 13 April 1877 in Thames, NZ.
