LifeSketch: Anne (Anna), the second daughter of King Frederick II of Denmark and Norway and Sophie of Mecklenbergh-Schwerin, was born at Skanderborg Castle, the royal hunting retreat on the Jutland Peninsula which was then being used as a residence by the Danish Royal family. Along with her older sister and two younger brothers, Anne was initially raised at Güstrow Palace by her maternal grandparents, the Duke and Duchess of Mecklenburg as it was the belief at the time that the parents would indulge their children too much. As a result, it wasn't until 1579 that the children returned to Copenhagen, possibly at the urging of the Danish Privy Council. age 14 years, her mother (by now Dowager Queen Sophie) successfully negotiated a marriage contract with James IV of Scotland, who favoured Denmark as a kingdom reformed in religion and a profitable trading partner. Shortly after a proxy marriage in Copenhagen in August 1589, Anne sailed for Scotland but was forced by storms to the coast of Norway. On hearing that the crossing had been abandoned, James sailed from Leith with a 300-strong retinue to fetch Anne personally: "the one romantic episode of his life". The couple were married formally at the Bishop's Palace in Oslo on 23 November and after stays at Elsinore and Copenhagen, the newlyweds returned to Scotland on 1 May 1590. arriage, seems to have shown her patience and affection but the couple gradually drifted apart and eventually lived separate lives. Throughout his life James had close relationships with male courtiers but whether they were of a sexual nature is open to debate. What we do know is that Anne gave birth to seven live children, as well as suffering two stillbirths and at least three other miscarriages, so it is possible James was bisexual.and Scotland with an heir so there was much joy and relief when she gave birth to her first child, Henry Frederick on 19 February 1594. But the parents were quickly at loggerheads over Henry's upbringing when Anne discovered she would have no say in her son's care. In keeping with Scottish royal tradition, James insisted the young Prince be sent into the care of John Erskine, Earl of Mar at Stirling Castle. Despite her anger and distress of the removal of her child, there was nothing Anne could do about it and her bitterness eventually ruined their married life. Finally in 1603 Anne got her revenge. Following Queen Elizabeth I's death, she refused to join her husband in London as the new Queen Consort of England unless Henry be allowed to accompany her and this time James gave in to her "willfulness".ouse, which she renamed Denmark House while James preferred to escape the capital, most often to his hunting lodge at Royston in Cheshire. penchant for staging and acting in elaborate masques. This coupled with her taste for expensive clothes and costly building projects made her as unpopular with her English subjects and added to the great financial difficulties of James' reign. Another bone of contention was Anne, who had been brought up a Lutheran and had a Lutheran chaplain in her household, was thought by some to have discreetly converted to Catholicism. Not even the Pope knew where she stood when it came to religion.ucting herself with discretion and graciousness in public. Anne played a crucial role, for example, in conveying to ambassadors and foreign visitors the prestige of the Stuart dynasty and its Danish connections.side. After lying in state at Denmark House, she was buried in the Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey; the delay in her burial was there wasn't enough ready money in the royal coffers to pay the funeral expenses.Denmark and Norway and of the Vandals and Goths, sister of Christian IV and mother of many Princes.
