Skanderborg, with a population of 18,253 (1 January 2011), is a town in Denmark just southwest of Aarhus. It is more or less a suburb today, located in Skanderborg municipality, Jutland. Skanderborg municipality has a population of 57,303 (2010). The municipality is also a part of the East Jutland metropolitan area with 1.2 million inhabitants. The town has three churches; one of which used to be part of Skanderborg castle, the traditional hunting retreat of Danish kings from the 12th-16th centuries. Since 1980, the Skanderborg Festival, an annual music festival has been held in a forest in the vicinity of Skanderborg. It is known as "Denmark’s Most Beautiful Festival". Skanderborg is the birthplace of the English and Scottish queen Anne of Denmark.
