Although Uncle Don died 8 years before I was born, I feel as though I know him. My mom is always talking about him - how great he was and how much she loved him. He was the sibling that Gramma was closest too, and she still talks about him quite frequently. When he met Mac, they just hit it off, and they were instantly a part of each others family.
One of my mom's favorite stories is the day that she drove with him to Aunt Janes, and as they started the trip Uncle Don looked over to Pat and said "I don't feel like stopping at any traffic light on the way today. So I'm not going to." And they didn't. He made all 15 lights. Sometimes he would creep along at about 2 miles an hour, other times they would be going 75 - but they never stopped at a light!
Uncle Don was the first to ask the immortal question "Why is a lemon?" (Refer to George Dennis McDonald)
When Uncle Don divorced Elaine he got custody of their 2 kids, with visitation from Elaine. She would come and get them for the weekend and just not bring them back. Uncle Don would go to court, get the order, get the kids back, and then it was time for another visit - this circle went on for a while. Elaine was constantly trying to drive a wedge between him and his kids, and he could see it was taking a big toll on his them - and he also knew it wasn’t likely to end any time soon. (Keep in mind this was in 60’s - I guess you could consider them trend-setters). Uncle Don loved his kids enough to let them go. Shortly thereafter Elaine & his kids moved to California.
