Carlos de Austria y AustriaIII ó el primer puesto en la línea de sucesión al trono de su hermano el rey Felipe IV hasta el nacimiento del príncipe Baltasar Carlos en 1629. Nunca mantuvo buenas relaciones con el valido de su hermano, el Conde-Duque de Olivares, y fue utilizado por varios nobles contrarios a éste para intentar derrocarle; no obstante, Carlos siempre se mostró poco atraído por los asuntos políticos. Estuvo a punto de subir al trono durante la gravísima enfermedad que sufrió Felipe IV y de la que finalmente se recuperó. A partir del nacimiento de su sobrino, el príncipe Baltasar Carlos, su papel político, si es que alguna vez fue importante, se disipó completamente. Don Carlos murió en 1632 a los 25 años de edad convirtiéndose en uno de los más enigmáticos personajes de aquel período debido a su extraña y puede que enfermiza personalidad.
