Notes about Col Henry Hampton

This Henry Hampton, son of Anthony Hampton and Elizabheth Preston, was supposedly an Indian trade with his older brothers in his youth in North Carolina. After moving to South Carolina in 1774, he quickly assumed leadership in the Up-Country and at the age of 26 was elected a respresentative to the 2nd South Carolina General Assembly with his brother John Hampton. Henry served with Ge. Thomas Sumter in th Cherokee Campaign of 1776 after the massacre of his parents (see Landrum's History of Spantanburg County, p. 184) and from 1778 to 1780 he was an officer in Sumter's 6th South Carolina Regiment on the Continental Line. He was captured by the British at Fishing Creek in August 1780 but escaped with Col. Thomas Taylor...Col. Hampton commanded the Broad River Riflemen at the Battle of Blackstocks in November 1780....after his brother Col. Edward Hampton was killed by Tories in 1780, Henmry and his wife toolk Edward's infant daughter Mary Ellenand reared her with his own four children....After the Revolution Henry seettled on land in Fairfield District purchased by the Hampoton brothers....He began to acquire land in Goergia and moved his family there in 1786....The Hamptons moved to Wilkinsoion Coumnty in southern Mississippi Territory iin 1805....in 1816 he bought a plantation across the Louisiana boorder and moved there with his wife Susannah, whom he called Sanah....Before 1826 Col. Henry and Sanah hampton returned to Cherry Field, Mississippi, where he died on 31 July at age 76.lina and Texas by Virginia Meynard.
