While she was gone, Some Tory & Cherokee Indians went to the Hampton home and massacred her father, mother, brother, Preston and her baby boy. They ransacked the home and kidnapped her nephew, John Bynum. From the woods, she witnessed the massacre and she and her friend road horses to Wood's Fort to get help. The Indians continued on to Preston's home and killed his 2 children there. His wife fled through the swamp and was found several days later in the woods. She never mentally recovered. Elizabeth's 5 brothers rode with troops to find the Indians.
