Joseph A. "Joe" Wiendl, of Los Gatos, Calif., and previously Westfield New Jersey died peacefully in his sleep on March 25, after a brief illness.

He was a devoted family man and Ingersall-Rand Co. manager. He was born Aug. 25, 1918, in Los Angeles.

Raised in Southern California, he graduated from San Fernando High School in 1935, where he was elected student body president. He earned a degree in mining engineering at the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology.

While at Montana Tech, Joe received several honors, including being elected student body president and varsity club president. He also earned 12 varsity letters in athletics.Upon graduation from Montana Tech, Joe joined Ingersall-Rand Co. as an engineering trainee. A meteoric, 42-year career followed, during which he served in a series of increasingly responsible management positions including corporate vice president and chief executive officer of several of the company's subsidiaries.

He was, in short, a legend in his own time at Ingersall-Rand.At his retirement dinner, Joe was the subject of effusive praise by the chairman of the board of directors, who said, "Joe's character, his friendliness, his capability, his loyalty, enthusiasm and dedication, his complete honesty and ethical approach to every business transaction, have earned a reputation unsurpassed among his business associates and friends inside and outside the company."

Joe and Betty were married in Betty's hometown of Butte, in 1943, and moved to Scranton, Pa., for a short period and then to Westfield, New Jersey, in 1949, where they lived for 50 years. Joe was the quintessential family man while concurrently building a highly successful business career.

He was active in community affairs, and followed the scholastic and athletic careers of his children assiduously.

He was preceded in death by Elizabeth "Betty" Wiendl, his loving wife of 55 years.He is survived by sister, Genevieve Way and her husband, Charles, of Glendale, Calif.; daughter, Mary Jane Whiteford and her husband, Stephen, of Los Gatos; son, Joseph C. Wiendl and his wife, Anna, of Stockton, Calif.; daughters, Judith Hood and her husband, Thomas, of Simsbury, Conn., and Jacqueline Smith and her hus
