104-jarige mevrouw Verbeek: 'Ik heb het goed gemaakt'

UDEN | Mevrouw Verbeek-Crooymans wordt donderdag 104 jaar en dat viert zij met haar familie in het Retraitehuis, waar zij sinds tweeëneenhalf jaar woont. Tot die tijd woonde zij nog zelfstandig in Carolushof. Zij beschikt nog over een redelijke gezondheid, maar haar gehoor laat haar in de steek. Dochter Rita is daarom behulpzaam bij het interview.

Mevrouw Verbeek werd op 7 september 1913 geboren in Overloon en was de op drie na jongste in een gezin van dertien kinderen, waarvan zij nu de enig overlevende is. Haar vader had een groot boerenbedrijf en was tevens wethouder in Overloon. Zoals het in die tijd gebruikelijk was moesten de kinderen al vroeg in het bedrijf meehelpen: "Vader zat achter ons heen, als we dat niet deden."

Dochter Rita: "In die tijd was poetsen in huis heel belangrijk. Mijn moeder heeft voor haar huwelijk als huishoudster in een welgesteld gezin gewerkt en ook in haar huwelijk is zij altijd thuis geweest om voor haar gezin te zorgen."

In Overloon ontmoet zij haar toekomstige man: "Het was een mooie man", maar die kwam uit Uden. En zo kwam mevrouw Verbeek vanaf haar trouwdag op 21 mei 1945 in Uden te wonen. Het echtpaar krijgt 2 dochters en 3 zonen en er zijn inmiddels 8 klein- en 8 achterkleinkinderen. Haar man overleed toen zij 60 jaar was en ook haar oudste dochter is inmiddels overleden.

Digitale tijdperk
Mevrouw Verbeek is in de tijd geboren van de olielamp, zonder alle gemakken, die door de technologische ontwikkelingen in de afgelopen eeuw gemeengoed zijn geworden.

Mevrouw Verbeek is moeiteloos met die ontwikkelingen meegegaan en zelfs op hoge leeftijd stapte zij met gemak het digitale tijdperk in. Rita: "Ze heeft met de i-pad leren omgaan, omdat dat voor haar vanwege haar doofheid een belangrijk communicatiemiddel is."

Rita karakteriseert haar moeder dan ook als ondernemend, zelfstandig en met een positieve levensinstelling. "Tot een jaar geleden was ze nog heel fit, ze leest nog dagelijks de krant en tijdschriften, doet wekelijks mee met de gym en wandelt elke dag graag in de tuin."

Haar geheugen laat haar weleens in de steek, maar als het gesprek over de Tweede Wereldoorlog gaat, veert ze op en weet ze nog heel goed hoe ze door de vuurlinie is gefietst. Dat was aan het eind van de oorlog, toen er in Overloon hevig is gevochten. "Ik werkte in Boxmeer en moest naar huis en dacht 'de ondergrondse helpt wel'. Ik was maar een beetje bang, want als je bang bent, kun je niks."

Op de vraag wat het geheim is om zo oud te worden, zegt ze: "Als je er niet bij nadenkt, word je vanzelf oud, maar blijven bewegen vind ik wel heel belangrijk!"

Mevrouw Verbeek kijkt tevreden terug op haar leven: "Ik heb het goed gemaakt en heb lieve kinderen." Ze is het leven ook nog lang niet moe en heeft het prima naar haar zin in het Retraitehuis.
