Hij schreef mij: "As far as I know in the origin the name Houterman, was Oultremont. The first lord that adopted Oultremont in its name was Jean Hustin I of Warnant of Landrier in midt 15th century. The place of Oultremont is nowadays called Warnant-Dreye,in the provence of Liege, Belgium. The Oultremont name was first used by the members of the Warnant family that joined the Emperor Frederic I in the war of Milan in 1167, as they were called "Oultre des mont" which means in old french: "The ones caming from over the mountains". This "Oultremont" name was recovered by the Warnant family members that took the side of Awans, in the war that opposed the Awans to the Waroux (ended in 1335), to destinguish themselves from the Warnants that took the side of the Waroux.
Some members of the Oultremont family moved to the western side of the principaly of Liege to Valenciennes and the name changed to Oultreman. Because in the old days the names were transmitted by mouth logicaly some spelling changes were maide over the years. In old french the "l" wasn't prenounced so sometimes you have the "Oultreman" name written as Outreman". The same way the difference between the "RE" and "ER" is quite common. The "H" was introduced both by people moving to the flamish side of the "low countries" , or by confusing the hand written "d" of "d'oultreman" with an "H"(the names are originally both d'oultremont and d'oultreman)."
