Wie was nu de vrouw met het wapen der drie ringen in het pand Mariaplaats no. 9?
In de ter sprake gekomen literatuur is aangetoond, dat de echtgenote van Evert Soudenbalch, de in 1530
overleden Utrechtse burgemeester, die aanvankelijk daar „in groot crediet" leefde, echter in 1525 uit de
stand gebannen werd „en zijn huis gespolieert" doch terugkeerde, geheten was Maria van Brienen. Grote
kans bestaat er daarom, ofschoon de tot dusverre bekende wapens - Van Brienen volstrekt afwijkend zijn,
dat het wapen met de ringen toch aan een al dan niet riddermatig geslacht Van Brienen heeft toebehoord.
Mocht deze verklaring onjuist zijn dan is er wellicht een geringe kans, dat het zou kunnen worden geïden-
tificeerd met het familiewapen Segrode of van Segraedt (Suggerode) omdat die naam in de oudste ge-
nealogie toevallig genoemd wordt, zij het in een stellig corrupte tekst: „Evert Soudenbalch d. tr. Gerrit
Suggerode de off ... 5)" Maar met dat al lijkt de verklaring Soudenbalch - Van Brienen zeker de meest waarschijnlijke
