    Johannes was assistent-olieman in de koopvaardij en indirect betrokken bij de grootscheepse operatie D-Day op 6 juni 1944. Een grote groep Nederlanders was ?aangewezen om met 12 Nederlandse sleepboten de Mulberry Harbours (kunstmatige havens voor de kust van Arromanches, Frankrijk) op hun plaats te slepen. Dit gebeurde niet alleen op D-day, maar ook in de dagen daarvoor. In de nacht van 23 op 24 april 1944, tijdens het verslepen van de Mulberry pontons, werd voor de kust van Engeland, nabij Dungeness, de Ms ‘Roode Zee’ getroffen door een Duitse torpedo. De ‘Roode Zee’ zonk en nam haar 13 koppen tellende bemanning, waaronder Johannes Steentjes, in haar ondergang.
