Jan Roelofsz van Cranendonck was landeigenaar in Nieuw Reijerwaard (vermeld 1443-1453) enlandpoorter van Dordrecht. Een landpoorter was iemand die buiten de stadgevestigd was maar tegen een jaarlijkse betaling dezelfde rechten genoot alseen poorter. Vermoedelijk na de grote overstromingen, waaronder de "SintElisabethsvloed" (1421), vestigde "Jan Roeloffs die men heet JanCranendonck" zich in de nieuw bedijkte polder Nieuw Reijerwaard, gelegen"after Slickerveer", waar hij 5 1/2 morgen land bezat. Nog lang nazijn dood stond dit land bekend als "Jan Roelofsz. V 1/2 mergen".Zijn weduwe erfde de helft van deze grond. De andere helft werd verdeeld onderzijn zoons Willem en Roelof Cranendock. Verder was hij in 1411 beleend met 7morgen land in Spijk onder Emmikhoven bij dode van zijn broer Willem vanGennep. 
Uit de grote overeenkomstvan de wapenvoering van vele Cranendoncks is aan te nemen dat ze uit dezelfdefamilie stammen, waarvan Jan Roelofsz de stamvader is. Niet alle verbindingenzijn echter bewezen. De ster in de wapenvoering verwijst naar eenbastaardafstamming vermoedelijk van het geslacht van Horne Altena, dat ongeveer het zelfde wapenvoerde.
