In May 1881, a large group of relatives, consisting of three families, went to North America. They left Rotterdam on the steamship Maas of the Holland-America Line. The ship arrived in New York on May 17 and the group continued to Muskegon. The three families were: Evert Alles Smit (1844 - 1920) with his wife Edske Diephuis (1846 - 1924) Sietje Alles Smit (1841 - 1913), her husband Sebe Diephuis (1847 - 1932) and their four young children Klaassien (1873 - 1897), Anje (1875 - 1894), Eiso "Isaac" (1877 - 1958) and Alje Evert (1880 - 1947) Sebe's brother Derk Diephuis (1857 - 1954), his wife Hillechien Ploeger (1853-) and their children, Eise (1876- )and Trijntje (1878-).
He died on December 21, 1956 in Muskegon, Muskegon County, Michigan, United States, he was 80 years old.
He is buried December 1956 in Sunrise Memorial Gardens, Muskegon County, Michigan, United States.Source 3
