The oldest mention of Ernstheem" dates from the 13th century, as "Ernestahusum·Äù, (which may have meant something like "Ernst's house") which was originally a *piece* of the Johannieter Monastery (Klooster) "Wijtwerd" in Usquert. This monastery is mentioned in 1304. The monastery had almost 600 hectares of cultivated land and salt marsh. According to a parish list from 1559, the monastery was an independent parish.

With the Reduction of Groningen in 1594, "Ernstheem" became the property of the province of Groningen. [The word reduction comes from Latin (reductio) and means bringing it back. In this case the return to the Republic, where the city of Groningen was merged with the Ommelanden. The current province of Groningen sees the reduction as the actual starting point of the province.]

On May 1, 1708, the province of Groningen sells the northeastern of the two farms on "Ernstheem" (now the Eenrumerweg 51 in Winsum) to Jacob Eeuwes and Elisabeth Writzerts for 3,550 Caroli guilders. The farm thus came into the hands of the grandfather of Jacob Derks Knol.

"Ernstheem" is now on Eenrumerweg in Winsum, near Eenrum, on the road from Mensingeweer to Baflo. The northeastern Knol farm is located at coordinates: N53 21.712 E6 28.549
