Pieter Knol and Grietje Smit were members of the Christelijke Afgescheiden Gereformeerde (Christian Separated Reformed Church), first in Spijk and after moving to 't Zandt. They always had to travel long distances for their Sunday church attendance.
Pieter Knol purchased the house number 23 on the Leermenster Meeden in 1865.
Grietje Alles Smit and her only surviving son Klaas moved to Zandeweer on April 24, 1891, according to the population register. She was transferred to the Gereformeerde Church of Uithuizen.
In Zandeweer, Klaas Knol bought a house with a garden. Grietjes brother Jacob Alles Smit (1832-1911) and his wife Gepke ter Borg (1823-1907) lived in Zandeweer. They ran a shop there.
