{geni:about_me} Johannes (Jan) WESSELS, baptized 1-6-1738, resident of Stellenbosch, ? 1782,
Married on 21-2-1767 to Cornelia STEYN, baptized in Tulbagh 6-4-1749, daughter of Hermanus Steyn and Martha Potgieter.
On 29-10-1764 Jan WESSELS obtained grazing rights on the farm Boschrivier at the Kleinrivierskloof.
According to the Overberg tradition, it is the custom that the eldest son must find his own farm. The youngest son inherited the family farm. The middle son or sons had to find another way of making a living, or they could marry a girl who would inherit ground. Another alternative for them was to (trek) move either further Northwards, or Eastwards. The idea of leaving the family farm to the youngest son had the advantage of allowing the parents to stay active on the family farm for a longer period of time.
