The witnesses at this rite of passage wa s not one o f the van der Merwefamily members, rather the y were Gerrit and Johanna (nee Rynick) Basson . His half brother, Marthinus van Staden was married to Catharina Botha, and Johannes married her younger sister Anna Margaretha Botha on 27 Aug 1730 in Cape Town.
