The witnesses at this rite of passage wa s not one o f the van der Merwefamily members, rather the y were Gerrit and Johanna (nee Rynick) Basson . Johannes was not t he eldest child in the household, sin ce Alleta had two surviving childrenfrom her first marr ia ge to Marthinus van Staden, namely Marthinus and Maria va n Staden . ...and this Branch was seasoned with Indian Spice...... . . . . Johannes was twenty one years old when his mother passed aw ay on 30 September 1729. Withthe death of both his parents, the Weeskamer made him the c ustodian of his brothers Willem an d Claas. When both his parents died (Claas c 1728 and Aletta on 30 Sept. 1729), Johannes was 21 years old and was made the custodian of his brothers Willem and Claas. His half brother, Marthinus van Staden was married to Catharina Botha, and Johannes married her younger sister Anna Margaretha Botha on 27 Aug 1730 in Cape Town.
