The witnesses at this rite of passage wa s not one o f the van der Merwefamily members, rather the y were Gerrit and Johanna (nee Rynick) Basson . Johannes was not t he eldest child in the household, sin ce Alleta had two surviving childrenfrom her first marr ia ge to Marthinus van Staden, namely Marthinus and Maria va n Staden . ...and this Branch was seasoned with Indian Spice...... . . . . His half brother, Marthinus van Staden was married to Catharina Botha, and Johannes married her younger sister Anna Margaretha Botha on 27 Aug 1730 in Cape Town.
