Notes about Johanna Maria "Ans" van der Torre

Ans van der Torre werd geboren 27 oktober 1908 te Kralingen (gemeente Rotterdam). In deze oude woonplaats werd ze gedoopt in de Nederlands Hervormde Kerk als Johanna Maria. Zij was het jongste kind van in totaal tien kinderen. Zij werd ook wel An en Annie genoemd
Haar moeder overleed toen Ans 9 jaar was. Onder dit gemis heeft zij geleden. Over haar kindertijd vertelde ze het volgende. Het eerste huis, twee onder een kap, een huurhuis, stond aan de Bosweg te Kralingen. Vlakbij het huis was een smal bosschage, direct ernaast de Kralingse plas. Aan de overkant was een café in de bocht Kortekade. Toen ze zes jaar was verhuisde het gezin naar Hillegersberg. Vader kocht daar het mooie, grote huis met flink erf eromheen aan de Rottekade, dat lang in de familie is gebleven (na sloop nog vervangen door een bungalow). Achter het huis kwamen tuinderijen van de zonen.
Behalve naar school kwam ze zelden buiten het erf. Ze speelde veel met het iets oudere zusje Marie: krijgertje, touwtje springen, diabolo, steltenlopen, knikkeren. Na de dood van moeder sliep ze enkele jaren bij vader in bed. Voorheen had hij weinig opgehad met de jongste dochter, maar nu werd ze zijn lieveling. Toen ze ongeveer twaalf was moesten de broers ingrijpen om aan dit nachtverblijf een einde te maken! Overigens was er geen sprake van onbehoorlijk gedrag.
Ans volgde de lessen van de openbare lagere school van Terbregge van oktober 1915 tot maart 1921, dus niet in Hillegersberg. Een zeer loffeljk getuigschrift mede ondertekend door de burgemeester is bewaard gebleven. Daarna volgde ze nog twee jaar v.g.l.o. Aan een naaischool van juffrouw Bos kreeg ze vervolgens, van 14 tot 16 jaar, onderricht in dit voor meisjes onmisbare handwerk, en ook in kralen rijgen.
Ans bleef thuis waar de jaloerse vader zich verzette tegen uitgaan of verkering. Als ze zat te lezen zei hij: 'heb je niets anders te doen?'. Aangezien hij haar soms sloeg, mede onder invloed van herhaalde dronkenschap, zorgden wederom de broers dat de inmiddels jonge vrouw het huis kon verlaten om intrek te nemen bij haar getrouwde zuster Dit Muus in de Julianalaan te Hillegersberg. Tot haar huwelijk op 24-jarige leeftijd hielp ze daar in de comestibleswinkel.

Ans bleef tot 1989 wonen in het huis Burgemeester ter Laanstraat. Toen dit te bewerkelijk werd en zij de tachtig gepasseerd was, verhuisde ze naar een aanleunwoning (flat) bij het Hervormd Centrum 'Pennemes' (verzorgingshuis) in Zaandam. Bij verkoop bracht het oude huis ƒ 93.000 op.
Zij bleef opgewekt en genoot van de omgang met de Zaanse kinderen. Haar generatiegenoten ontvielen haar stuk voor stuk; uiteindelijk overleefde zij alle broers en zusters Van Oosten en Van der Torre. Langzaam ging haar geestelijke gezondheid achteruit. In 2004 moest zij worden opgenomen in een verpleeghuis.
Zij overleed 18 september 2005 op 96-jarige leeftijd. Na een plechtigheid volgens hervormde liturgie werd zij bijgezet in het graf van haar echtgenoot.
