Ad, zijn zus Clasina en zijn broer Jules werden in 1900 wees.
Vader Zacharias Houtsmuller (machinist op een stoomschip van het Departement Marine) overleed op Sumatra in 1896. Op 6 juni 1893 kreeg vader verlof en ging het gele gezin naar Europa en vestigde zich in Alkmaar. Vader vertrok op 26-2-1894 weer naar Indië waar hij in 1896 overleed. Op 22 mei 1900 overleed in Alkmaar moeder en de kinderen kwamen in juni van dat jaar terecht in het Burgerweeshuis van Alkmaar. In juli 1900 vertrokken de kinderen naar een adres in Hoogland, daarna Bunnik, in 1903 vanuit Bunnik in Utrecht . Daarna vlogen de kinderen uit. Clasina bleef in Utrecht en werd verpleegster, Ad in 1907 naar Apeldoorn en Jules in 1909 naar Katwijk. Ad vertrok in 1910 naar Indië en Jules ook.
