Lid van het Verzet. Gearresteerd op 28-1-1941 te Arnhem.
Tijdens de meidagen van 1940 heeft kapitein Hulleman op de Grebbeberg gevochten van 11 mei t/m 13 mei 1940. Het leger hield drie dagen stand, totdat het op 13 mei terugtrok naar de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Na de Nederlandse capitulatie was hij plaatsvervangend commandant van Verzetsgroep Oranjewacht, afdeling Arnhem. Zijn schuilnaam was 'Wilbrink'. Hij kwam in april 1944 om het leven in het concentratiekamp Majdanek bij de Poolse stad Lublin.

De Oranjewacht in Arnhem was door zijn aanvoerder en oprichter Piet Hoefsloot (schuilnaam 'Rijndam') verdeeld in vier wijken van elk twee tot drie vendels. Hij werd gesecondeerd door 'Spaan' (Frans Heinekamp) en 'Grijzenhoofd' (Herman Coenradi). De eerstgenoemde belastte zich als drukker met het zetten en verspreiden van hetzegedichten, de laatste deed het kassierswerk: het inzamelen en spenderen van de kasgelden. Majoor G.H. van der Ploeg ('Van der Pas') had de opleiding van de militaire leden op zich genomen, terzijde gestaan door kapitein Jan Hulleman ('Wilbrink'), een persoonlijke vriend van Piet Hoefsloot. Hulleman had nog als staf officier meegestreden op de Grebbeberg en was betrokken geweest bij de berging van
gedumpte wapens, welke vervolgens in olielappen verpakt door Hoefsloot vervoerd en verstopt werden.
