By default the photos are in the order in which they were added. In the overview you see the newest photo at the top. In the slide show you see the oldest first. As archivist you can set that order yourself. This is a feature of the Plus subscription.
Have you given the photos titles with a year or number? Then you can sort them alphabetically in one go. Choose the option Sort alphabetically. A title like 1952 Wedding photo then automatically comes before 1960 Birthday.
Think about the order when uploading. Start with the oldest photos. Then you have less to drag later.
