Notes about Neil Campbell

Scotts Peerage Vol. I.
Neil of Ormidale, from whom it is said the houses of Ormidale and Ellengreig descend. He witnessed the charters of 1440 and 1442 ut supra. He had a son, Colin, described Colin Campbell Nelesone in an entail of 6 July 1452, when Neil was probably dead.

      Gillespic (Gillocallum) / Archibald Campbell (d 1091)
http://amg1.net/scotland/flemfam.htm suggests that Gillespic's original name was Erkenbald and that he was Flemish, probably descended from one the Baldwins, Counts of Flanders. It is indeed not unlikely that much of the ancestry provided on the continuation was fanciful, created to support a Celtic ancestry when it was politic to do so in Scotland. However, it is also not unlikely that many would dispute that! Our reviews of Campbell families in 2015 & 2020, referred to here, starts with Sir Gillespic or Archibald (d c1280), at the top of the lower section, but HJHeraldry (Campbell, vol 1, 'Pedigree1', p16) shows that he had 2 brothers, Strachur & Duncan, with reference for the continuation (vol 2, p72) being for Strachur rather than for Duncan, which was probably a simple error.

TSP reports that "It is possible" that Margaret (widow of Hubert de Multon) was mother of Colin but notes that his "only recorded wife is Lady Mary Bruce" and reports that "There is a constant tradition that he also married Margaret (Cameron)". Provisionally, we follow TSP which shows the marriages as below.
