6. In this circa 1930 postcard, the lorry on the Ieft is parked by the tram terminus. We see, on the extreme right, the Post Office and stationery and newsagent's business of Robert Wilson. This Townhill shopkeeper served on Dunfermline Town Council for 42 years, being Provost from 1927 till 1930. Observe the ornate Provost's lamp-posts outside his shop and abode. Townhill produced two other Dunfermline provosts, nameIy George Izatt (1945-1948) and Jean Mackie (19611964).

7. Back Street, Townhill, was renamed Wilson Street in 1913. Probably named after Robert, as reported in the Dunfermline Journal, 17.05.1913.
There is now a street adjacent to Wilson Street called Robert Wilson Grove. According to my Dads cousin, Tom Wilson, Robert Wilson Grove is named after another Robert Wilson.

There were new questions relating to fertility of marriage: on duration of marriage; the number of living children born to each marriage; and the number alive at the time of the census. There were changes to several others: categories for people with disabilities were revised and the introductory section to the third report on the 1911 census refers to the intended use of the terms as: (i) Lunatic - in cases where the infirmity had been acquired during life. (ii) Imbecile - in extreme cases where the infirmity had existed from birth or an early age. (iii) Feeble-minded - in milder cases where the infirmity had existed from birth or an early age.

Transcending all other events during 1945 was the victorious conclusion of the war against Germany and Japan. Public holidays were observed on 8th and 9th May to celebrate the cessation of hostilities in Europe, and a Services church parade and united service of thanksgiving took place in the Abbey. - A Welcome Home and Commemoration Fund for men and women returning from the Forces was inaugurated. It was decided that Bee Alley Gardens be laid out as a Garden of Honour, and that the bulk of the fund be subscribed to the Scottish Veterans’ Garden City Association for the provision in Dunfermline of houses for severely disabled members of the Forces. - On 9th March, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Rosyth Dockyard, where they held an investiture on board the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, HMS Implacable, and afterwards made a tour of the Dockyard. - Many Dunfermline soldiers liberated from German prison camps by the advance of the Allies were repatriated during April. In May there was a general 'stand down' order for the Civil Defence Services and Royal Observer Corps. - On 6th May, at a ceremony in the Regal picture-house, attended by Norwegian representatives, Dunfermline and district youth organisations 'adopted' the town of Trondheim in Norway. - On 11th May, Crown Prince Olaf of Norway embarked on a British warship at Rosyth Dockyard to return to his liberated country. The same evening, German naval surrender delegates were interrogated on board a British battleship lying off Rosyth.

For some time the 'black-out' had been reduced to a 'dim-out,' and this restriction was finally abolished on 11th May. - On 5th June, King Haakon of Norway, accompanied by members of the Norwegian Royal Family, left Rosyth on board HMS Norfolk to return to Norway after five years of exile. - At the General Election on 26th July, Mr W M Watson retained the Dunfermline Burghs seat for Labour with a majority of 9,993 in a straight fight with Mr James Henderson (National Liberal). In West Fife, Mr W Gallacher (Communist) was returned with a majority of 2,056. His opponents were Mr W Hamilton (Labour) and Major Scott Stevenson (National Liberal). - At midnight on 14th August, after the Prime Minister’s announcement of the unconditional surrender of Japan, there were great celebrations in Dunfermline and a huge bonfire was lit in the Public Park. - Throughout the war, the mansion house and grounds of Pitreavie were occupied as headquarters of No 18 Group, Coastal Command. - Inglis Street Emergency Hospital was closed down on 15th September, having dealt with 4,660 patients, including a large number of wounded soldiers, since the beginning of 1940. - On Friday, 28th September, the King and Queen, accompanied by Princess Margaret, visited Rosyth Dockyard and inspected ships’ companies aboard several vessels of the Home Fleet. - Thanksgiving Week was held in Dunfermline from 13th to 20th October when the total amount invested in national savings was £473,023. - Field-Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery visited Rosyth Dockyard on 15th November.

The Town Council accepted a recommendation with regard to the transfer by the Carnegie Trustees to the Town Council of the Carnegie Baths and Gymnasium, the four district Institutes, and Bandrum Children’s Home, on the basis of a lump sum settlement of £35,000 to be paid by the Trustees to the Town Council. - Mr George Izatt, Townhill, was elected Provost. As a result of the municipal election, Labour secured a majority of 13 to 8 in the Town Council. - Carnegie Trustees made a grant of £5,000 to provide an up-to-date X-ray apparatus in Dunfermline and West Fife Hospital. - In spite of public protests, the Carnegie Trustees adhered to a decision to utilise the Women’s Institute as a youth headquarters. - The combined total of The Dunfermline Press Red Cross, Prisoners of War, and Comforts for HM Forces Funds passed the £20,000 mark at the beginning of the year. - Mr John McWilliam, managing secretary, Lochgelly Equitable Co-operative Society, appointed managing secretary of Dunfermline Co-operative Society Ltd. - A sound film projector was installed in Dunfermline Combination Home and Hospital, which was the first institution of the kind in Scotland to provide this form of entertainment. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

      - Mr Robert Wilson, Townhill, a former Provost of the burgh, retired in October after 42 years’ membership of the Town Council.
