Southern Reporter 21 January 1869 Thomas Reid Drowning Longer Report
Singular Case of Drowning at Yetholm. - On Thursday last Thomas Reid, a painter residing in Yetholm, was found drowned in the Bowmount, a short distance from the village, under circumstances which go to show that he committed suicide. It seems that for some time past, Mr S. Laidlaw, grocer, has been the victim of a series of petty robberies, the money in his shop till, having been observed to disappear in a most unacountable manor. Suspicion at last fell upon Reid, who had been working on the premises; and a watch was accordingly decided upon. On Friday week two florins and a couple of shilling pieces were marked and placed in the till, from which they were abstracted the same day. They were afterwards recovered in various shops in the village, where they had been passed by Reid, who had evidently stolen them from Mr Laidlaw's premises during a visit he had paid on the day they disapeared. On the case being reported to the authorities, a warrant was issued for his apprehension, and a constable proceeded to put it in force on Wednesday. Reid had however, obtained information of the affair, and was not to be found at his lodgings, whence the policeman set out for him to Hawick, where he was supposed to have taken refuge. Meanwhile the culprit, who was lurking in a shed at the Deanmill, quietly returned to his old quarters, and spent the night there. He got up early next morning, left the house, and not long afterwards was found drowned in the Bowmont, in a pool but a few inches deep. The constable who had proceeded to Hawick with the warrant for his arrest received intimation of his death at Jedburgh while returning homeward. Reid was upwards of 60 years of age, and has left a widow, with a grown up family. He was a native of Jedburgh, and lived for some time in Kelso.-ibid

Yetholm
Drowning Case-
On Thursday, Thomas Reid, a painter, who has been residing here for some time, was found drowned in the Bowmont under rather peculiar circumstances. He had been engaged by Mr Shiell Laidlaw to paint some articles in his shop, and several things shortly afterwards being amissing, suspicion fell upon Reid. Mr Laidlaw leaving home one day. marked two-florin pieces, and also two one-shilling pieces, which were put into a drawer where Reid was working; and during the day, not only the money marked. but several old coins, were abstracted from the drawer. The money was afterwards recovered from various shops in the town, where they had been presented by Reid. On the case being reported to the authorities, a warrant was issued for his apprehension, and a constable proceeded to put the warrant in force. On Wednesday week Reid was not to be found at his lodgings in Yetholm, and it was supposed that he had gone to Hawick, and the policeman immediately went to that town to apprehend him, However, he had not gone there, but was secluded in a shed at Deanmill, and returned to his lodgings late that night, He got up early the next morning and left the house, and was found during the day drowned in the Bowmont, in a pool about a foot deep. The constable who had proceeded to Hawick with the warrant for his arrest, received the intimation of his death on his way home, Reid was upwards of 60 years of age, and has left a widow with a grown-up family. He was a native of Jedburgh, but some years ago, previous to leaving for Jedburgh, and latterly for Hawick, he kept an eating -house in the Horsemarket, and also a greengrocer’s shop in Sheddon Park Road, Kelso
