Notes about Mary Smith Gladstone

1. Pernicious Anemia - A chronic progressive anemia of older adults; thought to result from a lack of intrinsic factor (a substance secreted by the stomach that is responsible for the absorption of vitamin B12)

2. Puerperal Fever - A severe febrile disease which sometimes occurs in the puerperal state, usually about the third day after childbirth, originating in an inflamed condition of the peritoneum. Termed also metria. [Thomas1875]. A fever formerly supposed to be specific, appearing in puerperal women between the second and sixth days after delivery. It is now known that the disease is due to septic infection. [Appleton1904]. An illness resulting from infection of the endometrium following childbirth or abortion marked by fever and septicemia and usually caused by unsterile technique. Also called childbed fever.
