Op 17 september 1944 riep Radio Oranje de spoorwegstaking uit: "De kinderen van Versteeg moeten onder de wol". Hendrik nam deel aan de spoorwegstaking om de Duitsers te saboteren. Hij dook meteen aan het begin van de staking onder, maar de Duitsers ontdekten zijn onderduikadres. Op het station in Groningen werd Hendrik Boxma voor de ogen van zijn collega's gefusilleerd door een Duits vuurpeleton. Dit moest een waarschuwing zijn voor collega's bij de NS. Hendrik werd begraven op de begraafplaats Selwerderhof.


Hendrik Boxma woonde in Groningen aan de Bedumerweg 91a. Hij was de zoon van spoorwegarbeider/rangeerder Jacob Boxma (23 december 1881 Hooghalen - 6 maart 1931 Haren, Groningen, Boxma sr. kwam tijdens zijn werk om, toen hij door een rangerende trein werd gegrepen) en overwegwachteres Hendrikje Jantje Koenderink (3 mei 1884 Nijehaske, gemeente Haskerland – 8 maart 1974 Delfzijl). Op 23 mei 1931 huwde hij met dienstmeid Ida Blok (20 april 1899 Loppersum - 6 mei 1987 Groningen). Het echtpaar kreeg twee kinderen, Jacob en Frederik.

Hendrik Boxma was Rangeerder bij de Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). In september 1944 werd door de Nederlandse regering in ballingschap de Spoorwegstaking afgekondigd. Boxma reageerde hierop door onder te duiken. Op 23 september 1944 werd hij op zijn onderduikadres gearresteerd door SD-handlanger Harry Bouman (Polizeiangestellter Harm – Harry – Bouman (1 november 1917 Heusden – 24 december 2001 Breda) en doodgeschoten op het perron van de NS te Groningen.
