    Hij was theoloog en Nederduits Gereformeerd predikant te Grootegast en Doezum. Na de Reformatie worden de kerken van Doezum en Grootegast verenigd. Vanaf 5 december 1706 tot 1764, het jaar van zijn overlijden, is ds. Johannes Smook predikant van Grootegast en Doezum. In de nacht van 8 op 9 maart 1756 wordt hij overvallen door een joodse bende. Hij overleeft die gewelddadige beroving, die uitvoerig wordt beschreven door ds. Smook zelf in de kerkeraadshandelingen in het kerkboek van Grootegast - Doezum en in het boek " Tussen Hunze en Lauwers" van G. H. Ligterink. Bij de overval verliest Jantje Harms, de dienstmeid van ds. Smook, het leven.
